My mother dedicated 36 years to educating children in the public school system. At her retirement, a beautiful young college woman came and performed an interpretive dance. My mom was her 5th grade teacher. I witness how my mother's former students, many older than I, still run up and gush over my mom as "their favorite teacher." I know how teachers, including my mom, impacted my life.
DonorsChoose offers individual donors the opportunity to give towards education across the country. The tax-deductible gifts go straight to specific classroom project needs. Small gifts are welcomed, and some giving is matched by other philanthropists.
I invite you to my giving page, where I selected school projects (in high-poverty areas) to support. I set up my page under the "Black Bloggers for Education" group representing the AfroSpear. All of my giving is in honor of my mother.
Just click "Fackin Truth Blog Friends" in the widget below to visit DonorsChoose and give through the Fackin Truth blog drive.
that is an awesome opportunity
I think i better remember my own PS103 in my backyard
BTW, doesn't it just beg the question
Why are schools poor?
I thought we all paid taxes. Why are some schools better off than others?

@GC: Yes, yes, and YES! You make an excellent point. I also don't understand how schools end up "poor." No public school should ever be better funded than another - in terms of per-student spending. I live in a city where the grade school receives national awards all the time. The building is lovely. The curriculum is fantastic. Some of that I credit to the administration... but dang... they also have the money to make it happen!
Why that opportunity doesn't seem to exist across the board is mind boggling.

@RawDawg: Thanks. :-) I just came from reading that hot hot hot post at your site. (How the heck do you get any sleep?) LOL
@Kier Jones:Thanks for stopping by, Kier! As you can see by the outbound link, all tax-deductible contributions go directly to the classroom project of your choice. I received an email receipt after making my first contribution. $5 multiplied by many givers can have a huge impact!
